“Originally, the Sisters of the Dominican Order in Pátzcuaro used these Salamanders to make cough syrup.
However, since wild populations have declined, the convent now runs a successful self-sustaining breeding programme and is home to the largest known population of around 300 individuals.
The hope is to one day reintroduce the species to the wild, but this is limited by the poor water quality of Lake Pátzcuaro.”
