043 / Bowhead Whale
February 12th
’Balaena mysticetus’
“The Bowhead Whale gets its name from its large triangular skull, which it uses to break through Arctic ice to breathe.
As it's a slow swimmer, it was an easy target for hunters, and the population was severely reduced until commercial whaling was banned in the 1960s.
Numbers have been recovering but there is now concern that due to their reduced genetic diversity, they may be unable to adapt to the warming climate in the Arctic.”
