126 / Gouldian Finch
’Chloebia gouldiae’
May 6th
“Gouldian Finches generally have either red or black heads.
Females will usually only mate with a male of the same head colour as they are genetically compatible and will produce an equal number of male and female offspring, maintaining a balance in the population.
If a mismatched pair mates, female offspring have a higher mortality rate than males, but the female can counteract this by producing more sons.
This is one of the first proven cases of females overcoming genetic weakness by biasing the sex of their offspring.”
