139 / Hawaiian Crow
’Corvus hawaiiensis’
May 19th
“Several factors led to the extinction of the Hawaiian Crow in the wild, including habitat loss, hunting, disease and predation by introduced species.
Several reintroductions have been attempted on Hawaii's Big Island but predation by hawks became an issue. In 2024, five individuals were released to Maui where hawks are not present, with the hope that population establishment may prove more successful here.”
