“These deer are endemic to Bawean Island in the Java Sea, but during the 1960s much of the forest on the island was replaced by teak plantations, reducing their available habitat.
Efforts have been made to help numbers by thinning plantations and through captive breeding programmes and although the population remains low, it is now stable.”
