“Despite habitat loss due to human expansion, Racoons are highly adaptable and resourceful and have learned to thrive in urban environments.
They are often observed "washing" their food or paws, but this is a myth and is actually a behaviour called dousing.
As they are nocturnal they rely on other senses and have developed an incredible sense of touch.
Water increases the tactile nerve responsivness of their paws, so by dousing their food they are able to learn more about what they are holding before eating it.”
