098 / Eurasian Red Squirrel
’Sciurus vulgaris’
April 8th
“During autumn, Red Squirrels spend a large amount of time burying food for the winter when food is scarce.
They have an exceptional sense of smell, can find food buried under a foot of snow, and can tell if a nut is rotten before opening it.
Like humans, squirrels can be left or right-handed, or even ambidextrous.
Left-handed squirrels hold pinecones with the top pointing towards the left and use their left hand to rotate it, right handed individuals do the opposite.”
