February 15th
’Bombus terrestris’
“The Buff-Tailed Bumblebee is one of the most widespread bumblebee species in Europe.
They form complex social groups with overlapping generations, division of labour and cooperative brood care.
Unlike the ritualised dance of the honey bee, the bumblebee communicates the location of food to other members of the colony by returning to the nest and running around frantically with no pattern.
It’s thought that this spreads a pheromone that indicates the location and odour of the food, encouraging other bees to go and forage.”
