“Also known as the maybug or doodlebug, the Cockchafer is considered a pest as it does a huge amount of crop damage.
It had nearly been eradicated in the 20th century but as pest control has become more regulated numbers have begun to increase.
However in the Middle Ages pest control was rare and people had no means of protecting their harvest.
In one bizarre event in Avignon in 1320, cockchafers were brought to court and sentenced to leave within three days to a designated area, otherwise they would be outlawed.
As they failed to comply they were all collected and killed.”
